I had a wonderful day with the granddarlin’s! We left Baton Rouge and went to visit Laura Plantation! We had a marvelous 2 hour tour of the plantation, gounds and the outlying buildings. Located in Vacherie, LA on the west side of the Mississippi River, it takes about 45 minutes to get there. You were allowed to take pictures and walk around to inspect things of interest–a very laid back tour. Laura was a creole sugar cane plantation. French was spoken and the plantation was painted different colors–quite a contrast to the “American” plantation that were all white and would soon turn green in our heat and humidity.
Then we tried to eat at Hymel’s and they were closed, so we grabbed a quick bite at Wendy’s and missed our turn to go to Houmas House. It was pouring rain and we wound up on the Sunshine Bridge. Since Nottoway plantation was on the way back to BR, we stopped there for the tour. While a beautiful house and grounds, we were very disappointed in the tour.
By this time we were starting to think about “real” food and came across Crawfish X-press in Plaquemine. 20 pounds of crawfish and 6 boiled crabs later we were headed home to feast! A good time was had by all.
